ZHUHAI GRAND THEATER
2010 - 2012
Theater and Performing Arts Venue
GFA: 59,313 sq.m
The Grand Theater is located in the southern coastal city of Zhuhai inches away from the South China Sea. The design inspiration is from the Italian paint “The Birth of Venus” painted by Italian artist Sandro Botticelli in mid 1480s.
The Grand Theater consists with two theaters, the maximum capacity for the primary and secondary theater are to be 1600 and 600 respectively. The two giant shells are to be 90m and 60m in heights and supported by the steel structure.
The Research Division of Structure has participated in the design of the steel structure for the two giant shells. The design challenge was that two giant shell created two large barriers for the wind pressure, the steel structure must be strong enough to withstand potential Typhoons.
In September and October 2018, Typhoons Mangkhut and Yutu swept Zhuhai City leaving leaf and debris all over the ground, but the steel structure of the Grand Theater remained intact and no damages were observed.
